Tiptoeing to the hall closet, I pulled off my boots and lined them up neatly with the rest. Then, in my socks, quietly going up the stairs, I almost fainted from the horrible fright Ana gave me.
âOne, youâre not supposed to go out without telling anyone. Two, youâre not supposed to go out alone.â She was sitting on the top step in pitch black darkness.
âTHREE, youâre not supposed to lock your door!â Heart pounding, hand on banister, I felt my way up in the darkness and sat next to her. âThereâs more chance of my dying from a heart attack in this house, than being hurt anywhere else. Why are you sitting here in the dark?â
âIs Meany dead?â
âNo.â
âDying?â
I considered this. âWeâre all dying.â
âYes, but some more quickly than others.â
I could see her now, just a little. She was very pale. âDo you feel like youâre dying, Ana? You look like you might be. Should I get Nijah?â
âNo. Abster, would you miss me if I died?â
I found Anaâs hand in the darkness. âYes. Iâm sorry about my Bible study. It made you cry and I didnât mean it to do that.â
âNo, you did a great job with it. So great, I saw myself clearly ⦠Iâm Achan.â
I started to protest, shocked that sweet Ana would identify with a criminal. She put the hand that I was holding, over my mouth.
âHush. In case I die, I need to make my confession, Abster. Iâm the one who brought the sin on this family. Itâs my fault. I might have stopped it happening, but I was weak. Iâm not bright and brave like you, so I did nothing.â
I began to tremble and she put her arm around me, pulling me close to her.
âI saw them, Abster. I knew it was wrong and I didnât tell Mommy.â
My teeth began to chatter, but I wasnât cold. I felt instead, like I had a burning fever. âSaw who? What do you mean? Daddy and Yuli? How could you have seen them? How could you have known? Stop it.â
âHush,â she said again. âYou have to hear my confession, and if God punishes me with death, tell Mommy how sorry I was that I didnât do the right thing.â
I started to cry and she held me tighter.
âIt was at the ball game last summer. The one we went to for Nijahâs birthday. Daddy left to get us hot dogs. He was gone for so long that Mommy thought maybe he needed help carrying everything, and she sent me to find him.â
I remembered this. Nijah and I were annoyed because Ana had been gone for a long time and come back without a single hot dog.
âI looked everywhere and was about to give up when I saw him from across the entrance hall. He was in a stairwell near the menâs room. I started towards him then stopped. A woman in a bare back dress was holding his arm and ⦠I think she was whispering into his ear. He was laughing and his hand ⦠was on her bottom.
